Hugo Broos rejoices as Bafana Bafana shocks and dumps Morocco out of AFCON

In one of the biggest upsets in this 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Bafana Bafana dumped tournament favourites Morocco and head coach Hugo Broos couldn’t hide his excitement, after a well-earned 2-0 victory.

Playing in front of a packed crowd at Stade Laurent Pokou, Bafana played a patient game and pounced when it mattered most in the second half.

Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena with a stunning free kick towards the end of the game netted the important goals.

Broos rejoices on one of his biggest wins in African football.

"I have to tell you that I am very happy today, we beat Morocco and it's not only that we are in the quarterfinals but beating a team like Morocco is something special. This is a very good team with very good players but we did the right analysis and the way we played the tactic [tactically] was the right one," Broos said.

"The first half was nearly not a [good] game but the second half as the game was more open with a few chances for Morocco but we scored and that is always important, that you can score first.

"After that, yes we were a little bit lucky because Morocco started to play power play with all the players in front and high balls and very hard duels. So, they had a few chances then but after the second goal, the match was played and we are in the quarterfinals and we are very happy."

Bafana have set up a quarterfinal against the giant killers Cape Verde in Yamoussoukro on Saturday night at 8pm (10pm SA Time).

Morocco’s exit means that all the top five ranked African nations, including Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt are out of the tournament.

Broos says coming to this game against Morocco, they worked hard on analysing the opponent.

"The coach who wins the game always has the best tactic, it's always like that. If Morocco could score in the chances they had and we lost the game, maybe [then] you could ask me 'Coach why did you play like that' but we did a very good analyse [analysis] for Morocco,” Broos added.

“It's not the first time we played against them so we know their team because their team doesn't change so much, they are all good players. So, we knew today [Tuesday night] how we had to play and then on certain moments in the game you need that little bit of luck that we had in the second half, they missed a penalty, they got a few chances we could save and then yes, then you win the game.

“I think this was the right tactic because again, it's not because they lost that they become a bad team, it's really a very good team."
