Hugo Broos breaks down Bafana Bafana's effective game plan after Namibia's humiliation

Describing the approach that led to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Namibia in the second 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says it was important that they play effective football for the result.

Addressing the media in the post-match press conference at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire, Broos went into detail on how they plotted Namibia’s downfall.

In this game, Bafana were not as expansive in their play as in the Mali game where they lost 2-0 but were very effective with the ball, and Broos says this counts.

"No today [Sunday] is maybe not football of South Africa, we are a team who likes to play football and sometimes in the most difficult moments. So, I think the boys learnt their lesson. Again, we had a debriefing two days after the game and we showed the things we didn't have to do anymore,” Broos said.

“What's wrong with kicking the ball in front even when there's nobody when you are in trouble, there's nothing wrong with it. So, that is what we did, maybe our football was more realistic and I'm happy for them that we know also that it doesn't have to be always with nice football and good combination and technique.

“Sometimes you have to fight for it and kick the ball and have players who run after the ball and today that was the case."

Percy Tau opened with a penalty as early as the 14th minute and Themba “Mshishi” Zwane added a brace in the 25th and 40th minute respectively before substitute Thapelo Maseko wrapped up the game 15 minutes from fulltime.

One of the key operators in this result was Thapelo Morena who was brought in to start in Maseko’s place and he exploited the space behind the defenders with his pace, caused the penalty, and provided the assist for Zwane’s first goal.

Broos says this approach was very important as it also brought a lot of goals.

"I think the opponent was also different. Mali played football, they tried to build up but this team [Namibia] didn’t build up. They kick the ball in front and they have very dangerous players with Shalulile [Peter], with the attack on his own there and also the two wingers,” Broos added.

“Again, we did a very good analysis of the opponent and we knew that we didn't have to play that football that we played against Mali and the boys did very well. It was not always that nice good football but again the result is very important.

“The way we did it was very good, we scored four goals, again very important at the end for the goal difference."
