Hugo Broos: Bafana Bafana need no favours

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says their crunch 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe is their most important game in nearly 24 years.

Bafana play their penultimate fixture in Group C, where they are currently tied on 14 points with Benin but behind on goal difference after being docked three points by FIFA.

The last time Bafana reached the World Cup through qualification was in 2002 and Broos has stressed they still have their fate in their own hands.

"We are all aware that we are playing a very important but also very difficult game – I think this game is maybe one of the most important games in the last 24-25 years," said Broos.

"By victory we have a big chance of qualifying, by a defeat, I think we can stop dreaming. So that means it's very important [to win], but it will also be difficult.

"Zimbabwe has always been a very difficult opponent, and it will not be different tomorrow – they are very motivated, when I read their comments.

"Also, we don't have to expect favours from them, it was clear from two or three weeks ago, they wanted to play this game in Botswana despite playing their previous four games in South Africa.

"So you know that we can't expect favours – but we don't need them, we don't need their favours, if we want to win, we want to do it correctly."

Having started their camp in Johannesburg on Sunday before moving to Durban on Thursday, Broos says they have had a good week of preparation and he feels very confident about their chances against The Warriors.

"We believe in it, we are confident, as the captain [Ronwen Williams] said already. What I saw in the last three or four days of training makes me very happy, the boys are very motivated and they know the importance of [today's] game," he added.

"If we win, and God is with us, the last game against Rwanda [on Tuesday] can be totally different, and maybe we won't have to win that game anymore.

"So let's hope that can happen, but we don't have to focus too much on that, we just have to focus on ourselves and try to win [against Zimbabwe]."
