Sundowns have been drawn alongside hosts FC Masar, Morocco’s FUS Rabat and Cameroon’s Lekie FF, with the tournament set to kick off on 1 November in Ismailia.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Sapula acknowledges the challenge ahead as they look to reclaim continental glory.
“It is not an easy draw. Just looking at Lekie from Cameroon, not an easy team to play against. We also have FUS Rabat and FC Masar. They are going to be very strong competition for us.
“To win the best trophies, you have to play against the best. We will continue to do our part, by conducting diligent analysis so that we are well prepared for the tournament. We have to go out there and give it our best shot,” said Sapula.
The Sundowns coach also believes that increased competitiveness in the domestic league would better prepare South African clubs for continental competitions.
“We need a competitive league that can prepare us for CAF competitions, but now we try to compete in another COSAFA Championship to equip ourselves for big competitions such as the Champions League,” added Sapula.
Having joined the women’s team in March 2025, Sapula is approaching two years at the helm and admits that adapting to the demands of the role has been a learning process.
“I thought the adaptation process would be easy, but I am still adapting. I coach players of international standard, and a lot of them play for the national team. They understand the winning culture, and the mentality is to win every football match. We also have senior players who are driving this process and I am pleased that I get to lead this team. I have been part of the club for a long time, but joining the women’s team has required something different. I am getting there, and I am learning,” he expressed.
