Gavin Hunt blasts Durban City blunders after maiden topflight defeat

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt was left fuming after what he described as basic mistakes from his defence in their defeat to Betway Premiership leaders Sekhukhune United on Saturday.

Sekhukhune struck early, with Bradley Grobler opening the scoring before Thabang Monare doubled the lead all within 15 minutes, and held out for a 2-0 victory to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2025/26 season.

Hunt, who anticipated a tough outing against the in-form Babina Noko, said he was shocked by his team’s lack of concentration at the back.

"They had a good side, a lot of experience, but we can't give [away] two goals like that. I mean, the two goals sets you right on the back foot and then you're against it all the time," bemoaned Hunt.

"There was nothing before that, so we've got to look at ourselves there – two horrendous mistakes and then they manage it well, and they've got the experience, especially in the central midfield and Grobler is the best in South Africa at doing what he does.

"So it's disappointing because, out of the five games we've had now, we've had three tough away games, won one, drew one and lost this one, which – if you said it before the start of the season...

"And in the second half, we really had them back [in their own half], but they've got the experience, they've signed a lot of players and they've done well, so you've got to give them credit for that, but all-in-all, we gave them certainly the start [they needed to win]."
