Durban City boss remains grounded despite satisfactory start

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt believes his side’s unbeaten start to life in the Betway Premiership should be viewed with perspective, stressing that the real challenges of the season are still to come.

The newly promoted outfit have collected two wins and two draws from their opening four matches, placing them among the early pacesetters alongside Sekhukhune United, Kaizer Chiefs, and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns as the only teams yet to suffer defeat.

.Despite this strong opening, Hunt — a four-time league champion — remains pragmatic, pointing out that the title race is a marathon, not a sprint.

"Normally promoted teams struggle and they struggle with speed and the quality and all that but I think we've handled ourselves quite well. You know, we are gonna be tested, we know that, I know that but we can get ourselves in a good position and get points on these types of games. You gotta give the team credit and everybody credit, in my opinion," Hunt said.

Hunt’s charges held Polokwane City to a goalless draw midweek, a point the coach was only happy to push their tally to eight out of 12 points.

"If we get eight in the next four games again I'll take it. Anytime you get two points a game, you know, if you get two points a game until the end of the season, so yeah. Obviously it was a chance for us to go forward like them, they wanted to win the home game, you know, we missed the home game last week but because we conceded one goal in four games you can build on that,” the coach added.

“We need another striker, we know that, we short up there, you know, taking midfield players and playing them up there and those types of things but we know that but that's neither here nor there."

City next face table toppers Sekhukhune on Saturday and Hunt knows what they are up against. He also confirmed the search for an additional striker.

"Sekhukhune's got a very good squad of players, a very experienced team. We're gonna try and pick ourselves up and go again and see where we are. In certain positions, we need two three positions but you need somebody that can play a certain way, not just a striker.

“What type of striker? Does he run, does he channel, does he hold, what does he do? You know what I'm saying. So, we need a certain type, which hopefully something can happen."
