Exclusive: Bongani Zungu casts doubt over AmaZulu future

AmaZulu midfielder Bongani Zungu has told SABC Sport that his future at the club remains uncertain, with just three months left on his current contract.

The 33-year-old acknowledged growing questions around his next move, particularly amid limited game time and his recent omission from the squad by coach Arthur Zwane for the KwaZulu-Natal derby against Richards Bay.

Zungu, one of the more experienced figures at Usuthu, finds himself in a squad that has increasingly leaned towards youth development in recent seasons.

The club has moved on several senior players like Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Ben Motshwari, reshaping the team’s profile and long-term strategy.

Since arriving at AmaZulu in December 2024 as a marquee signing, Zungu was expected to play a leading role both on and off the pitch.

However, this season has proven challenging as Zungu has not consistently featured in Zwane’s plans – raising further uncertainty about his standing within the squad.

Addressing speculation over a possible contract renewal, Zungu was candid about the situation to the public broadcaster.

“I don’t know if I will be an AmaZulu player next season. My contract is coming to an end, and I’ll leave that to the sporting director (Pedro Dias) because he seems to have all the answers when it comes to that,” he said.

Despite the doubt the midfielder insisted his focus remains on the present.

“It’s humbling to still have interest from other clubs, but I am fully committed to AmaZulu until the end of the season despite being sidelined by the coach in the past two games ” he added.

Zungu’s recent absence has sparked suggestions of a possible fallout with the technical team, although he stopped short of confirming any tension.

With interest reportedly building from rival Betway Premiership clubs, the coming weeks are likely to be decisive in determining whether Zungu extends his stay in Durban or moves on.
