Coach Eric Chelle raised eyebrows by leaving out the experienced skipper, a decision that sparked debate despite the Super Eagles collecting all three points. Chelle brushed off calls to justify his selection, but Troost-Ekong was quick to show support, speaking glowingly about Fredrick’s maturity and performance on the big stage.
“I don’t think the focus should be on me or why I didn’t start,” Troost-Ekong said.
“The real story today is Benjamin. He came in under huge pressure and delivered an amazing performance. At his age, here in Uyo, that’s not an easy thing to do. So, I just want to say congratulations to him — that’s the question we should all be talking about today.”
Fredrick’s composed display at the back has been widely acknowledged as a key factor in Nigeria securing the win that keeps their qualification hopes alive.
Attention now shifts to the Super Eagles’ next assignment — a showdown with Group C leaders South Africa at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
Troost-Ekong said the squad is fully focused on building momentum.
“It’s good to see you guys back with us. We never stopped believing, so welcome back,” the captain told reporters. “We have an important game again on Tuesday. I saw the change room directly after the game — there wasn’t even celebration. There’s a real desire to keep pushing on. Like I said yesterday, we really believe in what we’re doing. We can only control the things we are doing now, and we will take it step by step. The next step will be South Africa away."
