Egypt legend Aboutrika questions Bouaddi positional switch under Man City's Maresca

Former Al Ahly and Egypt star Mohamed Aboutrika has voiced concern over Manchester City manager Ezno Maresca's use of Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Boaddi.

The former midfielder criticized Maresca's decision to use Bouaddi in a more offensive position during the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on the weekend.

"Playing Ayyoub Bouaddi as a number eight or number ten is like playing [Lionel] Messi in goal," said Aboutrika as a pundit on beIN Sports MENA after the match.

"His position is number six. Why change his positioning?"

The teenager struggled to make an impact against the Seagulls before being replaced by Rayan Cherki in the 55th minute as the Cityzens tried to find an equalizer.

Aboutrika also believes the qualities Bouaddi displayed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are being under-utilized in terms of ball-winning, distribution and carrying the ball forward.

The 19-year-old has made nine appearances since his big money move to the Etihad Stadium from Ligue 1 side Lille, providing two assists.
