Maresca backs Donnarumma but warns no Man City player is 'undroppable'

Enzo Maresca has confirmed Gianluigi Donnarumma will remain Manchester City's first-choice goalkeeper for Saturday's Premier League clash with Brighton, but insists no player is guaranteed a place in his team.

The Italian goalkeeper has come under scrutiny following several mistakes this season, while reserve keeper Geronimo Rulli strengthened his case for more opportunities with an impressive performance in Wednesday's League Cup victory over Brighton.

Rulli produced two saves in the penalty shootout after City twice came from behind to draw 2-2, raising questions about whether Donnarumma's position was under threat.

However, Maresca made it clear he still prefers Donnarumma between the posts as Premier League leaders City prepare to welcome third-placed Brighton to the Etihad Stadium.

"I think it is one thing to say that in this moment it is Gigio plus 10, and another thing to say undroppable. They are two different things," Maresca said.

"There is no player that is undroppable, but in this moment it is Gigio plus 10. In this moment I see it like this."

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is determined to get a better result after Wednesday's defeat and has spoken about the prospect of revenge against City.

Maresca expects another difficult contest, pointing to Brighton's attacking approach and ability to create chances.

"Again, this is going to be a tough game," he said. "No matter if they play in a different competition or with a different team, they always try to be front foot.

"They attack with many players, they score many goals, they create many chances."

Hurzeler also suggested City had been fortunate to progress in the League Cup, but Maresca was not interested in becoming involved in a war of words.

"Every manager can say something different. It depends on what you see with your eyes. But I respect what he said," he added.
