Dorah Mashigo proud of Team SA’s CUCSA gold medal triumph

Team SA women’s football head coach Dorah Mashigo is glad that the team’s hard work and discipline has finally been rewarded after they clinched gold at the 2026 Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games in Botswana.

South Africa secured a commanding 2-1 victory over Zambia in the final at Lekidi Sports Complex in Gaborone.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mashigo says she is pleased that every player embraced their role and contributed to the team’s success.

“Winning the championship is a proud and humbling moment. It is a reward for the hard work, discipline and commitment shown by the players and the entire technical team throughout the tournament. What made this team special was the unity, belief and willingness to work for one another.

“Every player embraced their role, and together we created a positive environment where everyone was focused on one goal – bringing the championship home,” said Mashigo.

The 43-year-old mentor admitted she expected a tough encounter against Zambia in the final and encouraged her players to remain calm and tactically disciplined.

“I encouraged the players to rely on their technical ability, play quick one- and two-touch passes, and transition quickly from defence to attack. The aim was to move the ball faster than the opposition could react, avoid unnecessary physical battles and create scoring opportunities.

“The players executed the game plan brilliantly. They remained disciplined, stayed calm under pressure, and showed great teamwork and determination, which ultimately led to our victory,” added Mashigo.

Looking ahead, Mashigo says she is determined to continue developing players while furthering her own coaching education by pursuing her CAF B Licence.

“My focus now is to continue developing players, improve myself through further coaching education by pursuing my CAF B Licence, and help build stronger pathways for women’s football.”
