'I sacrificed everything for this flag' - Senegal great Sadio Mane retires

Senegal legend Sadio Mane has called time on his international career after 14 years following his country's dramatic elimination from the FIFA World Cup in the last-32.

The African nation suffered heartbreak at the global tournament after letting a two-goal lead slip before losing 3-2 against Belgium in the knockout clash.

The 34-year-old Mane departs the international scene as one of the greatest players Senegal has ever produced, having earned 132 caps and scoring 55 goals.

Mane's international career will forever be remembered as the most glorious period in his nation's footballing history, thanks to capturing two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles â- though the latter was stripped after a walkout saw them leave the pitch during the 2025 final in protest over a penalty decision.

He paid tribute to the Senegal public and said he will always be available to his country in whatever capacity if they want to use him in the future.

In a statement published by Senegalese outlet Le Quotidien, Mane said: "Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave the very best of myself and I always fought fiercely for our homeland.

"Your constant support has been the engine of my success. Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the nation, whether within a technical staff, on the sidelines as a coach, or in the governing bodies."
