Morocco, Algeria march into WAFCON quarter-finals as Kenya exit

Morocco finished top of the group despite being held to a goalless draw by Senegal, while Algeria booked second place with an impressive 2-0 victory over Kenya.

Morocco ended the group stage unbeaten with seven points and did not concede a single goal, while Algeria finished one point behind after producing a confident display against Kenya. Senegal ended third on four points, with Kenya leaving the tournament without a point.

Algeria Secure Quarter-final Spot with Comfortable Win Over Kenya

Algeria produced a dominant first-half performance to defeat Kenya 2-0 and confirm their place in the knockout rounds.

Captain Marine Dafeur gave Algeria the perfect start in the 14th minute with a superb long-range free-kick that flew beyond Kenya goalkeeper Lilian Awuor.

The North Africans doubled their advantage nine minutes later after Lynda Bendris pressed goalkeeper Elizabeth Ochaka into making a mistake inside the penalty area. Bendris quickly reacted to win possession and although Awuor managed to get a hand to the shot, the ball still crossed the line.

Kenya responded positively and nearly pulled one back before half-time when Martha Emedot fired a powerful effort just wide of the target.

Algeria also came close to adding a third before the break as Morgane Ikene rose well to meet a cross, but her header drifted narrowly past the post.

Kenya enjoyed more possession after the interval as they searched for a way back into the match, but Algeria's organised defence rarely looked troubled.

The Harambee Starlets' best opportunity came with 10 minutes remaining when captain Mwanalima Jereko controlled the ball brilliantly before sending a low effort just wide of the post.

Algeria comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to claim an important victory that secured second place in Group A and a place in the quarter-finals.

Morocco Finish Top Despite Senegal Holding Firm

Morocco claimed first place in Group A after playing out a goalless draw against Senegal in Rabat.

The hosts had already guaranteed qualification before kick-off, but were aiming to complete the group stage with three straight victories.

Morocco controlled possession for long periods and created several attacking opportunities through Ghizlane Chebbak, Sakina Ouzraoui and Elodie Nakkach, but Senegal defended with discipline throughout the contest.

The biggest moment of the match arrived in the 69th minute when Morocco were awarded a penalty.

Yasmin Mrabet stepped up, but Senegal goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye produced an excellent save. The penalty was then ordered to be retaken, but Ndiaye guessed correctly once again to deny Mrabet for a second time and keep the scores level.

Morocco continued to push for a winner and coach Jorge Vilda introduced Fatima Tagnaout and Najat Badri in search of fresh attacking options.

Senegal remained organised defensively and occasionally threatened on the counter-attack, but neither side could find a breakthrough during a tense closing period.

The draw was enough for Morocco to finish top of Group A with seven points after two wins and one draw. The Atlas Lionesses also completed the group stage without conceding a goal and will now face the runners-up from Group B in the quarter-finals.

Algeria join them in the last eight after their victory over Kenya, while Senegal bow out after a determined display and Kenya's campaign ends without a point.
