Desiree Ellis happy with Banyana Banyana versatility ahead of WAFCON title defence

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis believes her final squad has enough versatility to execute the big task of defending their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown in Morocco.

This statement arrives after announcing her final 24-player squad, with two non-travelling reserves in Nthabiseng Majiya and Casey Gordon.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Ellis says there are different phases in challenging for a continental title, which require players who can transition from one position to another in case key players get injured.

"Getting the right mix of players was very important for us. Our recent friendlies showed the versatility within our ranks, and our versatility will be key for us in Morocco. Refiloe Jane, for instance, has played every position on the field, except as goalkeeper. Ramalepe is another example; she can play both as a defender and as an attacking winger," said Ellis with a smile on her face.

Ellis explains why rising star Gordon will remain a non-travelling reserve, citing lack of experience and adding that it would be unwise to throw her in the deep end.

"Casey Gordon, unfortunately lost out due to a lack of experience. It wouldn't have been fair of us to throw her in the deep end like that.

"We do have a bit of a problem with goalkeeping, and there is a shortage of high-quality goalkeeping coaches in this country because when players arrive in camp, some of the goalkeeping basics are missing from their game," explained Ellis.

Star forward Thembi Kgatlana is a notable absentee, having requested to be released from this year’s WAFCON squad due to personal reasons. Ellis says it is not good to miss a player of Kgatlana’s calibre ahead of a major tournament, however she believes this gives an opportunity for other players to step up.

"There's no two ways about it, Thembi Kgatlana is one of the country's top players, but if you examine the 2022 WAFCON, other players stepped up in the absence of Thembi."

Ellis further shares that players need to remember that they are also contenders in the competition despite being defending champions.
