Conceicao shoots down Cristiano Ronaldo 'passing claims' ahead of Portugal's Uzbekistan clash

Portugal opened their campaign with a frustrating 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo, with questions raised about whether Ronaldo's reduced movement at 41 years old was affecting the team's attacking play.

However, Conceicao rejected the idea that teammates were forcing passes towards the five-time Ballon d'Or winner and said decisions were based purely on finding the best option on the pitch.

"We don't feel the need to pass him the ball," Conceicao said. "I pass it to whoever I think is in the best position and unmarked."

The Juventus winger added that Ronaldo remained an important member of the squad but was treated like every other player when it came to team decisions.

"Cristiano is an example because of his career and the hunger he still possesses at 41 years of age," Conceicao said. "An example of leadership and the goals he scores."

"There is no one like him when it comes to scoring goals. He is here to help, just like any other player."

Ronaldo's experience remains a major part of Portugal's hopes, but Conceicao stressed that success at the tournament would depend on the contribution of the entire squad.

Portugal now face Uzbekistan in their second Group K match in Houston on Tuesday, knowing they need a victory to boost their World Cup hopes after dropping points in their opening game.

Conceicao admitted the team were disappointed with their performance against DR Congo and understood that more criticism would follow if results did not improve.

"No one takes it harder than we do. We felt firsthand that we didn't do our job in the best possible way," he said.

"If things don't go well, there will be more pressure and more criticism. We want to show our quality and win the next match."
