Christian Eriksen edges closer to Wolfsburg debut as coach Paul Simonis weighs fitness call

The 33-year-old midfielder, who joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer earlier this week after leaving Manchester United in the summer, impressed during his first training session with Die Wolfe but is not yet ready for a starting role.

Eriksen has not played a competitive match recently, but he has kept his sharpness by training with Swedish side Malmo. Simonis admitted the Dane's match fitness remains uncertain but praised his immediate impact in training.

"I don't know exactly what his fitness level is," Simonis said on Thursday. "He trained with Malmo last week and kept himself in good shape before that. Today was his first session with us, and he left a very good impression. After the final session we'll decide if he will be in the squad. But he won't start."

The Wolfsburg boss stressed that Eriksen's experience and versatility will be crucial once he settles. "I'm very happy that he chose us. He is secure on the ball and can make decisive contributions. He is able to play deeper or further forward in midfield. In one or two weeks we'll know his best role for the team."

Wolfsburg, who finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season on 43 points, are looking to build consistency under Simonis after an inconsistent start to the new campaign. The signing of Eriksen has been viewed as a statement move, with fans hopeful that his creativity and leadership will strengthen a squad that has often lacked control in midfield.

Eriksen himself has said he is "excited for a new chapter" and eager to contribute as soon as he reaches full match fitness.
