The 34-year-old Christian Eriksen, who plays for VfL Wolfsburg, fell to the ground in the second half while Denmark were leading 2-1. The midfielder suddenly dropped without challenge and lay motionless, leaving players from both sides and supporters in shock as the stadium fell silent.
Medical staff rushed onto the pitch immediately to provide treatment, while teammates formed a protective barrier around him. After several tense minutes, Eriksen regained consciousness and was able to leave the field under his own power before being taken to hospital for further examinations.
The match between Denmark national football team and Ukraine national football team was quickly suspended and later abandoned as concern for the player took priority over the result.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed Eriksen's condition was stable following the incident.
"Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself," Boesen said. "As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should."
He added: "He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him."
Boesen also confirmed further tests would be carried out at hospital to understand what triggered the collapse.
"He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital," he said.
"But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay."
The incident immediately brought back memories of Eriksen's collapse at Euro 2021, and once again left players and supporters deeply shaken as football took a back seat to the player's wellbeing.
