Chippa United demand PSL, SAFA probe referee after Sekhukhune clash

Chippa United have called on the Premier Soccer League and the SAFA to urgently investigate referee Philangenkosi Khumalo’s performance in their 1-1 draw with log leaders Sekhukhune United.

In a letter seen by SABC Sport, the Chilli Boys levelled serious allegations against Khumalo after awarding two penalties in the Betway Premiership clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Bradley Grobler converted the first to equalise in the 76th minute, while the veteran striker missed a second spot-kick in stoppage time. Chippa have not disputed the latter, but believe the first was unjustifiable.

The Gqeberha-based club further accused Khumalo of bias in the second half, claiming “every major decision favoured Sekhukhune,” while also raising concerns around his integrity – going as far as to suggest his actions may have been influenced by bribery.

In their submission, Chippa urged SAFA, as the body responsible for appointing referees, to probe Khumalo. They also requested the PSL to advise on the “proper channel” to escalate the matter, including approaching the South African Police Service (SAPS) if necessary.

“This issue is now a matter of integrity, accountability, and trust in South African football. Our club seeks not only disciplinary action where due but also the proper legal recourse to ensure such conduct is rooted out permanently,” the letter read.

Chippa stressed they remain committed to working with the PSL to safeguard the integrity of the competition but warned they “will not stand idle while refereeing of this nature undermines the League and endangers the club’s status.”
