Chiefs' continental hopes left in tatters after SuperSport loss

SuperSport United all but extinguished Kaizer Chiefs' hopes of continental qualification with a 1-0 victory at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

SuperSport had two early chances as they took advantage of poor defending from Chiefs but both efforts flashed across the face of goal.

In the 16th minute, Chiefs had their first chance and it was best of the game from both sides when defender Siyabonga Ngezana rose highest to meet Reeve Frosler's cross but could only head over the bar.

Soon after, SuperSport midfielder Grant Margeman fired a powerful left-footed effort towards the left-hand corner but Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen got down smartly to make the save.

Frosler's deliveries were proving a problem for SuperSport as next Christian Basomboli got on the end of the Chiefs wing-back's corner but headed over.

With 10 minutes to go before half-time, Petersen came to the Amakhosi's rescue again when this time he produced more heroics to repel Bradley Grobler's header from Thapelo Maseko's cross..

The pressure tolled on Chiefs as Matsatsantsa opened the scoring in the 41st minute through Gampani Jones Lungu, who finished with aplomb after a period of sustained pressure from the hosts.

The Glamour Boys suffered a blow shortly after half-time when centre-backs Edmilson Dove and Ngezana collided going for the same ball resulting in the former being stretched off the pitch and replaced by Zitha Kwinika.

Another Frosler set-piece caused havoc in the SuperSport box on the hour mark before the ball fell kindly to Ngezana, whose snapshot was inches wide.

Patrick Maswanganyi and Dillon Solomons then traded chances for SuperSport and Chiefs respectively but both fired wide and in a rather tame ending, the match fizzled out to a draw.
