Chelsea face huge risk as FA charges could threaten possible points deduction

Chelsea are under serious scrutiny after being hit with 74 charges by the Football Association, with the club facing the possibility of a points deduction similar to the punishment once handed to Luton Town.
The charges, which cover a period from 2009 to 2022, centre on alleged breaches of regulations relating to agents, intermediaries, and third-party ownership of players.
Most of the issues are believed to have taken place between the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons, during Roman Abramovich's ownership of the club.
The FA confirmed in a statement: "In total, 74 charges have been brought against Chelsea FC. The conduct that is the subject of the charges ranges from 2009 to 2022 and primarily relates to events which occurred between the 2010/11 to 2015/16 playing seasons. Chelsea FC has until 19 September 2025 to respond."
Abramovich sold the west London club in May 2022 to a consortium led by Todd Boehly, following sanctions imposed by the UK government after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The new ownership group discovered possible irregularities in financial reporting during their due diligence checks and self-reported these matters to the FA.
Chelsea said in a statement: "Immediately upon the completion of the purchase, the club self-reported these matters to all relevant regulators, including The FA. The club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency during this process, including by giving comprehensive access to the club's files and historical data."
The FA could still impose a fine, transfer ban or a points deduction. In 2008, Luton Town were handed a 10-point penalty for breaking rules on agent payments, raising the prospect of Chelsea facing the same sanction.
If deducted 10 points, Enzo Maresca's unbeaten side would fall from second place with seven points to the bottom of the table on minus three.
Despite the looming threat, Chelsea are preparing to return to action this weekend after the international break.
Maresca's men will make the short trip across west London to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, aiming to extend their strong start to the campaign.
