Cape Town Spurs lose fourth player on free after Mervin Boji gets all-clear

SABC Sport can confirm that striker Mervin Boji has been cleared by the Premier Soccer League’s Dispute Resolution Chamber to leave Cape Town Spurs as a free agent.

The ruling means the Urban Warriors have now lost at least four high-profile players through the same process.

Spurs’ relegation to the ABC Motsepe League — the amateur ranks of South African football — opened the door for an expected exodus, with captain Asanele Velebayi, Luke Baartman and Liam Bern among those having moved on.

Spurs attempted to hold the players to what they claimed were binding contracts, however, the NSL handbook is clear that relegated clubs cannot sell contracted players, effectively freeing them to leave without a transfer fee.

Kaizer Chiefs quickly swooped in for long-time target Velebayi and also secured Baartman, while AmaZulu landed Bern.

Boji has since followed by pursuing a move to Chippa United, a move Spurs once again tried unsuccessfully to block.

The public broadcaster can now confirm the former Stellenbosch FC forward is free to sign for a club of his choice, with the Gqeberha-based outfit expected to be his next employers.

Meanwhile, Spurs have lodged an appeal with SAFA in the Velebayi and Baartman cases, with the matter set to be heard next week once an arbitrator has been appointed.

The Cape-based side are seeking to have the DRC’s ruling overturned.
