CAF Champions League’s battle-hardened Mofokeng ready for decisive AFCON role

Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates attacking sensation Relebohile Mofokeng believes that his experience in last season’s CAF Champions League has prepared him well for the demands of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mofokeng made his AFCON debut when he came on as a substitute during Bafana’s 1-0 group-stage defeat to Egypt in Agadir. There is growing optimism that he could be handed a role in tonight’s crucial round-of-16 clash against Cameroon at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat (20:00, 21:00 SA time).

Mofokeng enjoyed an impressive Champions League campaign with Pirates last season, something that could benefit him now...

"We are very happy to be a part of the last 16, we are tired, but we can't give up now. In Champions League, you get to witness competitive football, the physicality, the energy and you get used to these just playing in the Champions League. I think it taught me a lot," said Mofokeng.

Mofokeng directly contributed to eight goals with five goals and three assists as they reached the Champions League semifinals last season.

Mofokeng was on the pitch for over 20 minutes against Egypt, a challenging encounter in which Bafana were chasing the game despite their opponents being reduced to 10 men. He says that brief appearance allowed him to observe key aspects of tournament football...

"I think they play with physicality and mentality. We need to bring our A Game so that we can beat their physicality and energy. We have to bring the right mentality, even from the bench, we have to support our guys and keep going," added Mofokeng.

Despite limited game time so far, Mofokeng has made it clear that he understands his role within the squad and remains unfazed by not being a regular starter...

"It is a privilege to be on the bench. Many players wish to be here, so just being on the bench is a privilege - you can come on anytime," he expressed.

The clash against Cameroon could suit Mofokeng’s attacking style, with the match expected to open up and provide space for quick, skilful players. He believes he is ready to contribute should the technical team call on him...

Known for his fearless approach, Mofokeng may be small in stature, but makes up for it with confidence, creativity and technical quality - traits that have already endeared him to fans at the club and international levels...

The School of Excellence product has also been linked with several overseas clubs over the past few seasons. He is aware that strong performances at AFCON could further enhance his profile and attract more interest from abroad.
