Broos urges SAFA to invest in long-term planning for all national teams

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is urging the powers at SAFA to continue with the progressive approach of keeping all junior national teams active and aligning the programmes.

Speaking to the media at the SABC Sport studios today, after announcing the squad to play international friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique, Broos says they have to be intentional about these plans. Most of the players who were dropped from this squad are going to the COSAFA Cup team.

"What is going to happen now, is what should happen every time. From the preliminary squad list, all the players who don't feature in the final squad, will get their chance to play COSAFA," said the Belgian boss.

The COSAFA Cup will take place from the 4th  until the 15th of next month in Bloemfontein, and South Africa is in Group A, together with Mozambique, Mauritius, and Zimbabwe. This team will be coached by the U17 national team's head coach, Vela Khumalo, and Broos says consistency is important.

Broos has also revealed that he’s already sat down with the Acting Technical Director, Molefi Ntseki, to map the way forward for his programmes. He says in August, they will meet again with all the junior national team coaches to align their programmes ahead of the U17 and U20 World Cups and senior World Cup qualifiers and AFCON tournament.

"There is a new technical director, and together, we have come up with a few plans. What I can say is, when I return from Belgium in August, we will have a meeting with all of the coaches, and we will discuss the path ahead for the future. Our goal is to create a structure, because like I said four years ago when I first arrived, I can't understand why a country like South Africa didn't have certain things in place," Broos pointed out.

Broos was also asked about the omission of Kaizer Chiefs players from his final squad, after Bruce Bvuma, Mduduzi Shabalala, and Yusuf Maart had appeared in the preliminary squad. With about 12 players from that preliminary squad going to the COSAFA Cup team, it’s unclear how many Chiefs players will be there. But Broos says based on their inconsistency in the league, Amakhosi players didn’t deserve to make his squad.

"For the moment, I can't select players from Kaizer Chiefs, but I hope they offer a better campaign next season. I have to remain honest in my choices, and it's up to the Chiefs players now."
