Broos reveals that Brazil are keen to play Bafana Bafana but asking for $5 million

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed that they would have loved to play some of the world’s top footballing nations, like Brazil, but they are too expensive, asking for $5 million.

Speaking to the media on the first day of their camp ahead of international friendly matches against Latin American side Panama, who are ranked 33rd in the world, Broos said they had an offer to play Argentina, but Argentina was also asking for 5 million euros (R97 million) to come to Johannesburg. Broos added that Panama is also not coming for free.

"The best scenario should be that you can play against an Asian team, a Central Americsn team and a European team. A few minutes ago, I spoke to Lydia [Monyepao], the CEO, and she told me that Brazil want to play against us. I said, 'very good, why not?' she replied, 'Yeah they are asking for $5 million to come,' " said Broos

"A few months ago, Argentina also wanted to play in Johannesburg against us, for 5 million euros. You understand? It's easy to say 'Ah, why not that?' So Panama is not coming free either, you have to pay also."

Bafana Bafana are in Group A at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June, alongside co-hosts Mexico and South Korea, with the third team from Europe to be decided next week in the playoffs (Ireland, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, or Denmark). Broos says the opponent they’re likely to face in May will either be an Asian or European team as they finalise their preparations.

There is good news in this camp, with no reported injuries after a weekend of club football. All the players are expected to arrive to camp in good spirits, as Broos gave the Sundowns players a day off after returning from CAF Champions League duty in Mali. The overseas trio of Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Samkelo Kabini and Mbekezeli Mbokazi are expected tomorrow.

With 23 players in camp, Broos says the plan is to give all players some game time on Friday in Durban and next Tuesday in Cape Town. Like he’s done previously, he’s planning to play two different teams.
