Broos demands focus ahead of crucial World Cup qualifier against Lesotho

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says his side cannot afford to drop points when they face Lesotho in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Friday.

The game was originally scheduled for Toyota Stadium, but FIFA ordered the switch after raising concerns about the state of the pitch, following an inspection.

With just four matches remaining in the qualifiers, Bafana lead Group C on 13 points from six games, five clear at the top.

Broos believes that a win against Lesotho will put pressure on other teams in the group.

"The game on Friday is a must-win. We cannot afford to drop points against Lesotho, and that doesn't mean I underestimate the opponent, because that is the biggest mistake we can make.

"We have to be careful of our neighbours because they drew against Nigeria last year."

After facing Lesotho, Bafana’s next major test will be against Nigeria in Bloemfontein, subject to FIFA’s final approval of the venue.

Nigeria will play Rwanda on Saturday evening in Uyo. Broos believes that securing maximum points against their neighbours will not only strengthen their grip at the top but also increase the pressure on the Super Eagles.

Since taking charge, the Belgian tactician has worked to eliminate the complacency that previously plagued Bafana against less-fancied opponents.

He is adamant that his current squad carries a sharper focus and mentality.

"My focus is on Lesotho right now because the most important thing as of this moment is securing a victory against our neighbours. If we don't, we might have more trouble in the future.

"We want to avoid any stressful matches in October."

Broos was joined at yesterday’s press conference by Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala and in-form Orlando Pirates utility player Kamogelo Sebelebele, both of whom are expected to feature prominently in the upcoming fixtures, in the place of the injured players.

The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning coach has a lot of trust in his new selections.
