Broos addresses his future on the back of ‘successful’ World Cup campaign

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, says clarity on his future will be given in the next few days after he was asked if he’s sticking to his original decision to not renew his contract when the FIFA World Cup is over.

Speaking after their exit from the World Cup, following a 1-0 loss to Canada in the round of 32 match at the Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles, Broos says he can’t make conclusions about his future right now.

Broos’ five-year tenure with Bafana comes to an end after this World Cup, and it’s still not clear what the next step is...

"First of all, I'm always open if people need advice. Secondly, I will see over the course of the next few days what I will do in the future. I said that this would be my last World Cup, and it is for sure but what happens in the next few weeks also depends a little bit on how South Africa sees the future with me."

Reflecting on the loss, Broos attributed this result to a number of things, including a lack of power, the speed of the game, and the fact that Canada were in control for large parts of this game, winning most duels with ease.

"We have to be honest. We lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team when I compared us to Canada. Modern football is more than just technique, it's about power and speed."

Bafana Bafana hadn’t qualified for the World Cup through the qualification process since 2002, and after a 24-year wait, Broos says they believe they have gained results that have put the country back on the international scene.

Broos also said the World Cup, especially the knockout phase of the competition, is two levels higher than the normal Premier Soccer League (PSL) back home, where the majority of the players are coming from.

With Pitso Mosimane strongly tipped to succeed Broos ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers starting in September, the Belgian-born coach says he will not be imposing himself with his advice for the new coach, but he says his successor will be inheriting a very good team...
