Bafana left heartbroken as Appollis reflects on Canada defeat

Bafana Bafana winger Oswin Appollis believes South Africa produced a committed performance against Canada but ultimately came up short against a determined opponent that ended their FIFA World Cup campaign.

Hugo Broos’ side looked set to force the game into extra time before midfielder Stephen Eustáquio struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory for the North Americans in Los Angeles, ending Bafana’s historic run at the tournament.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Appollis admitted the result was difficult to accept and insisted the left everything on the pitch.

"It was a difficult game today although I think we managed to create chances, but congratulations to them. We did our best, we wanted to win but it wasn't our day today."

Reflecting on his debut at the World Cup, the Orlando Pirates star added that there was another level he could have achieved.

"It was an amazing tournament, and I felt like I could've done more but these things happen you know. It's just painful to concede so late, but we will continue on."

Appollis urged his teammates to lift their heads and keep their chin up as they head back home.
