Chiefs recently exercised the option in Petersen’s contract, extending his stay at Naturena until June 2027 – the move has provided the club with breathing space to continue negotiations with the goalkeeper’s representatives as they look to tie him down beyond the current extension.
Petersen has enjoyed a strong season, featuring in 26 matches across all competitions, conceding just 16 goals and keeping an impressive 15 clean sheets.
His form has been a key factor behind his elevation to club captain, underlining the trust and belief placed in him by the technical team. Although Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup following a defeat to Zamalek, Petersen’s performances have remained a standout in an otherwise challenging campaign.
The 31-year-old joined Amakhosi in 2021 after leaving Bidvest Wits following the sale of the club’s top-flight status.
It was in January 2024 that the shot stopper signed a two-year deal with an option to extend, which has now been activated by the club.
Discussions are understood to be ongoing, with no sense of urgency or tension around the talks for all those involved.
The public broadcaster understands that there is no immediate desire from the player’s camp to seek a move elsewhere, with Petersen settled in his leadership role and is highly valued within the setup at Naturena.
Chiefs are keen to reward that loyalty and form by securing his long-term future, with early negotiations aimed at finalising improved personal terms.
