Bongani Zungu set for India move

SABC Sport has it on good authority that Bongani Zungu is set for a fresh challenge in India, with terms understood to have been agreed with Malappuram FC.

The 33-year-old midfielder is expected to complete his move to the Super League Kerala club once the final formalities are concluded in the coming days, opening the door to another foreign adventure after his departure from AmaZulu in May.

Zungu became a free agent after the two parties agreed to part ways amicably at the end of his contract. While he had been assessing options in South Africa, including interest from Betway Premiership clubs, the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is now set to continue his career abroad.

The move represents another opportunity for Zungu, who has previously played in Portugal, France and Scotland during an overseas career that included spells with Vitória Guimaraes, Amiens and Rangers.

The midfielder is understood to be keen on the Malappuram project and believes he still has at least another season or two as a professional footballer.

Zungu’s move also follows a growing trend of South African players exploring opportunities outside their own local comforts, with the midfielder now set to experience football in a new market.

A former Sundowns player across two spells, Zungu first left the Brazilians for Vitória Guimaraes in 2016 before moving to Amiens and later spending time on loan at Rangers in the Scottish Premier League under Steven Gerrard.

The public broadcaster understands that Malappuram are preparing to welcome Zungu, with the final details of the agreement expected to be completed shortly before his move is formally announced.
