The former Bafana Bafana international joined Usuthu in December 2024 as a free agent following his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns, arriving with a wealth of experience gained both locally and abroad.
Zungu was highly regarded by AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu, who viewed the midfielder as an important addition to the squad because of his leadership qualities and extensive playing background.
Although it took time for him to regain full match sharpness after a lengthy period on the sidelines, Zungu played an influential role during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign and helped stabilize the team in midfield.
However, the season that has just concluded proved more challenging for the 33-year-old having made only 13 appearances under coach Arthur Zwane, with limited game time becoming a growing source of frustration.
Earlier this year, Zungu told the public broadcaster that he was uncertain about his future after being left out of several match day squads, without a satisfactory explanation for his omission according to him.
With his contract due to expire next month, it has now been confirmed that the midfielder will not renew his stay at AmaZulu and will instead explore opportunities elsewhere.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star believes he still has several seasons left at the highest level and is not considering retirement.
Whether that next move comes in the Betway Premiership or abroad remains to be seen. Zungu previously enjoyed spells with Vitória de Guimarães in Portugal, Rangers in Scotland and Amiens in France's Ligue 1.
He has also been linked with Sekhukhune United in the past, while his close relationship with current Al Ittihad Tripoli coach Rulani Mokwena could potentially open doors elsewhere.
Zungu was previously assessed by Wydad Casablanca during Mokwena's tenure in Morocco, although a deal ultimately failed to materialise.
