Ben Motshwari becomes free agent after surprise AmaZulu exit

SABC Sport can reveal that midfielder Ben Motshwari and AmaZulu FC have parted ways under unclear circumstances.

The 34-year-old has not featured for Usuthu since their home win over Stellenbosch FC last month, missing three matches thereafter — including the Carling Knockout last-16 defeat to Magesi FC.

Details surrounding the early termination of his contract remain sketchy, but the public broadcaster understands the decision was taken shortly before Sunday night’s cup elimination.

Motshwari joined AmaZulu from Orlando Pirates two seasons ago as a free agent and appeared to be part of coach Arthur Zwane’s plans, having made seven appearances in all competitions this campaign. With his experience, the club viewed him as a vital leader within a relatively youthful squad.

Of those seven outings, Motshwari started three matches and was a regular feature in the 18-man matchday squad.

However, it has since emerged that an internal disciplinary hearing took place, hinting at possible off-field issues. Following that process, both parties agreed to part company — leaving Motshwari as a free agent.

Because the transfer window is closed, the veteran midfielder can only sign with a new club when registration reopens in January.

Contacted for comment, AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu confirmed that Motshwari was indeed leaving the club.

“Sadly, Ben has been released by the club in lieu of dismissible disciplinary breaches,” he explained.

Motshwari previously lifted the Premier Soccer League title with the now-defunct Bidvest Wits under Gavin Hunt in 2017.
