Abram Mongoya not panicking despite slow Betway Premiership start

Kruger United coach Abram Mongoya says they remain calm despite a slow start to life in the top flight of South African football.

Kruger are one of eight teams yet to pick up a win after three games in the 2026/27 Betway Premiership, and currently sit second from bottom of the table just above Marumo Gallants.

Mongoya says they’re still earning their stripes after only being promoted from the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season.

"I don't think we are panicking right now as we sit at the bottom of the log. I think it's all about us learning in this new league. Me and the club management know the truth about our pre-season and it's a true reflection of what we are going through at this point in the campaign. I believe we stand a good chance to grow and develop in the next couple of games, although the fixtures don't get any easier."

Mongoya admitted that there is a considerable gap in quality between the top league and the second tier, and his team is still trying to find their feet in a highly competitive environment.

Kruger went down to Kaizer Chiefs in their opening game of the season before a draw against Gallants. They then lost again to fellow debutants Milford FC last weekend.

"The Betway Premiership is very competitive and highly tactical, especially compared to the NFD. Clubs like Marumo Gallants and Chippa United have got quality players with experienced technical staff members, and they themselves have not been able to register their first win of the season which proves the competitive nature of this league."

With cup football this weekend, Kruger only return to action on Tuesday against Durban City.

Mongoya has identified the areas that need working on this week, not least of which creating clearer goal scoring chances.

With the transfer window only closing next month, Mongoya is still hoping to add a few more players to his roster, saying that they need to put a more balanced squad together to be able to compete.
