Bafana skipper reacts to AFCON elimination

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams admits they failed to peak at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a shortfall that contributed to their round of 16 exit against Cameroon on Sunday.

Bafana were beaten 2-1 by the Indomitable Lions at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat after missed chances ultimately proved costly.

Speaking to SABC Sport after the defeat, Williams said South Africa’s biggest stumbling block was their inability to find rhythm and consistency at key moments of the tournament.

"We are very disappointed because we had high expectations of ourselves coming into this tournament, but for some reason we haven't hit our peak, and we only showed the best of ourselves in patches."

Williams said one of the biggest concerns was not being able to keep clean sheets.

"We have been known to be very solid as a team, because we have kept a lot of clean sheets over the last few years, but now when you see the amount of goals we conceded in this AFCON, it is a concern."

Bafana finished third in the previous AFCON and the skipper said in as much as expectations were raised, Morocco was always going to have its own narrative.

Williams added that the continental stage was an eye opener for Bafana ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada and USA later this year.
