Atletico Madrid star Giuliano Simeone eyes World Cup glory with Argentina

He earned a spot in the starting lineup and clocked nearly 3,000 minutes across 47 matches. Undoubtedly, his performances have been a testament to his hard work, especially as he has always maintained that, despite his father being the manager, only actions on the pitch secure opportunities.

Reflecting on the campaign, Giuliano Simeone said to the media, "We had a season where we missed out on titles, but we tried to give our best."

To reach this point, however, he had put in immense effort in the months prior. Upon arriving in Argentina to join the national team camp, he expressed disappointment at not lifting silverware with Atletico Madrid but highlighted his pride in earning a call-up to the Argentina squad. This had been a key target after suffering a serious injury during a pre-season stint with Alaves two summers ago.

Following a fibula fracture in August 2023, Giuliano Simeone's goal was not just to return to his best form. His sights were set far higher, playing for Argentina at the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Achieving this would signal a full physical recovery and confirm his status as a pivotal player for the club that have nurtured his growth.

So far, he has covered much of the journey. His recovery from the serious injury was flawless, and he carved out a place in Atletico Madrid's squad. His performances on the pitch earned him a regular starting role, catching the eye of Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni, who has him in mind for the next World Cup. If all goes to plan, Giuliano Simeone stands a strong chance of making the squad for the reigning world champions.

Speaking to Argentine media about the prospect of playing under Scaloni in the summer of 2026, Giuliano Simeone said, "It's a dream, I'd love it, but I have to work for it day by day." His footballing quality and mentality certainly make him a strong contender.

"Everyone in the national team instils in us that we must always win," he added upon arriving in Argentina. "I always try to learn from the best in the world, listen, and contribute."

He also enjoys the fortune of sharing the dressing room with teammate Julian Alvarez, who have also shone in their debut season at Atletico Madrid. "We all know the player he is, wherever you put him, he does things very well," Giuliano Simeone said of his fellow rojiblanco.
