Arrows break horror losing streak with Polokwane victory

Golden Arrows broke an 11-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Arrows unveiled Steve Komphela as their new head coach on Thursday with Mabhudi Khenyeza demoted to the reserves as a result of the horror run.

Komphela made an instant impact in his first game in charge as he helped break the second longest losing streak in PSL history courtesy of Nduduzo Sibiya's 85th-minute winner.

City were the dominant side in the opening exchanges with Oswin Appollis going close with a couple of efforts from distance. Arrows almost took the lead against the run of play when Nhlanhla Zwane was unable to fire past Manuel Sarpunga in a let-off for the hosts.

On the half-hour mark, an Arrows mistake saw Douglas Mapfumo pounce on the ball and his effort flashed dangerously across the face of goal.

The sides went into the half-time break goalless. Appollis threatened after the break with an inswinging free-kick that put Mlungwana to work at his back post. In the 67th minute a similar effort from Appollis called Mlungwana into action again.

City pushed all out for the equaliser but Arrows held on to move into eighth position on the DStv Premiership standings.
