Aden McCarthy winning praise from dad for his Chiefs progress

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy has praised the resilience and maturity shown by his son Aden in grabbing his chance to cement a place in the Amakhosi first team.

The 21-year-old defender has made six appearances in all competitions this season and caught the eye with assured performances, although he has recently found himself coming from the bench.

McCarthy Sr, an assertive and combative defender in his day, says his son’s attitude and professionalism make him a role model for young players coming through the Chiefs academy.

The former national team stalwart reminded Aden that early success means little without consistency and discipline to sustain it.

"He has been training with the senior team for the past three seasons, and during that time he has held his ground. He is doing really well, and now it is just a matter of consistency, working hard each and every day."

McCarthy Sr. maintained that while he offers guidance, Aden is firmly in charge of shaping his own destiny.

According to his father, the current Chiefs defender has already surpassed him in ability.

"I said to coach Ernst Middendorp three years ago that I believe he is better than I was. He grew up in a solid structure, and now the only thing for him is to prove himself as often as he can.

"I never forced anything onto Aden. From the beginning, this has been his choice and his career."
