Wallabies superstar Tom Wright sidelined with ACL injury

It's heartbreak for Australia winger Tom Wright as he ends his season prematurely due to an ACL injury against South Africa in the Rugby Championship on Saturday.

Wright went down in the opening minutes of Saturday's 30-22 defeat to the Springboks in Cape Town, clutching at his knee. He was helped off the field shortly after.

Wallabies officials have since confirmed his worst fears and Wright is on his way back to Australia for surgery.

"Scans have confirmed fullback Tom Wright suffered an ACL injury in last night's Test against South Africa in Cape Town," the statement said via social media.

"He will return home with the group today to see specialists this week."

Wallaby boss Joe Schmidt has several options to replace Wright, with the likes of Max Jorgensen and Andrew Kellaway in good touch. Alternatively, Schmidt could push Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii to fullback, where he plays for the Waratahs.

Wright has been in flying form in the gold jersey. The winger was one of their best during the British and Irish Lions series and backed it up with a try against the Boks in last week's famous win.
