After four weeks without a match following back-to-back defeats to the Sharks, the Cape side resume their campaign lying third on the log with a game in hand. A further Highveld test against the Bulls awaits in Pretoria, making the next fortnight pivotal in shaping their playoff trajectory.
Attack coach Dawie Snyman confirmed that Ruhan Nel, Deon Fourie, Dan du Plessis, Jean-Luc du Plessis and Seabelo Senatla have all returned to training, with decisions on their availability to be finalised later in the week.
"They have all started training with us and we will make a call on their availability," Snyman said. "It will be a tough call as they've been out for a while and you don't want to rush anyone back too quickly."
The potential return of Nel and Dan du Plessis would restore the Stormers' established midfield combination at a time when Damian Willemse is expected to sit out under Springbok resting protocols. Nel's presence would also strengthen the defensive organisation and leadership structures within the side.
In the forwards, veteran flank Fourie is being carefully reintegrated after recovering from a torn bicep. The 39-year-old is likely to be eased back into action from the bench.
"It will be good to have him to help out Paul (de Villiers), but it is going to take him two or three games to get fully match fit," said Snyman. "He has worked hard on his return. He's tough mentally and brings strong leadership. It's about the standards he sets in the group."
The Stormers have also welcomed back loose forward Hacjivah Dayimani following his stint in France. His return adds pace and attacking variation to the back row, particularly valuable given injuries to Salmaan Moerat, Ruben van Heerden and Ruan Ackermann, which have stretched resources in the pack.
Snyman stressed the importance of the upcoming fixtures as the race for playoff places tightens.
"These games are massive. We want to be at the top end of the log when the tournament reaches the business end," he said. "The loss at home to the Sharks hurt, so these away games are important for us."
The Lions will present a stern challenge after their recent win over the Sharks in Johannesburg, with Snyman highlighting their balanced attacking and kicking threats.
"If you give them momentum and space, they punish you. We have to be accurate and not allow that," he said.
With key leaders returning and greater depth available, the Stormers have an opportunity to regain momentum on the Highveld and reinforce their position among the URC frontrunners.
