Rassie Erasmus raises injury concern over exciting Springbok newcomer

Springbok newcomer Yaqeen Ahmed looks set to return home from the November tour after picking up a shoulder injury, with the 20-year-old facing scans to determine the extent of the problem.

Coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed the concern during Monday's team announcement, revealing that the talented Stormers flyhalf had reported discomfort in his shoulder.

Erasmus praised Ahmed for being upfront about the injury but admitted it could leave the youngster unable to participate in training.

"He was honest with me and told me he had a sore shoulder," Erasmus said. "Normally new players would try and hide an injury a bit, but he was nice and honest.

"It doesn't help for players just to watch the guys training, we want them to participate. If we need somebody and he can't play, we'll make the call whether he has to return to South Africa.

"It looks like he'll have to go back home and go for a scan or two, but we'll make that call (on Tuesday)."

Ahmed was one of six uncapped players included in the 37-man Springbok squad for the second leg of the Nations Championship, which begins against Italy this Saturday.

Erasmus opted not to hand any newcomers their debuts for the opening Test, but suggested the uncapped contingent might get opportunities later in the tour against some of the world's leading teams.

"They are special players, who all bring something different to the team, and we have full faith in their talent and skillsets," Erasmus added.
