Positive update on Bok lock's eye injury

Munster coach Graham Rowntree gave a positive update on the Springbok Jean Kleyn's eye injury.

The 2023 Rugby World Cup winner suffered a serious knock to his eye when he ran out for Munster in a United Rugby Championship clash in November. At the time, medical staff believed Kleyn would be out until the New Year, but as that came and went, the prognosis worsened.

Now, five months later, the towering lock is still yet to feature for the Irish giants. However, speaking to the press ahead of Munster's titanic clash with the resurgent Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday, Rowntree provided an update.

"It could, it could be, yeah," said the Munster coach when asked if Kleyn would be healed by the time Ireland rollin the Republic in July, as per rugby365.com.

"I never thought about that. Crikey, thanks for reminding me.

"There was a bit of confusion in the Irish media that his eye injury may be worse than suggested, but no, he has seen a specialist in America, and he and we are very happy with the plan going forward.

"He will be available [for Munster] for next season. When that next season starts, I can't tell you exactly."

The Springboks season kicks off against Wales at Twickenham in June, after which they welcome Ireland for a highly anticipated two-test series in July.
