Lions sweat on Springbok Ruan Venter injury ahead of Munster knockout clash

The Lions are sweating over the fitness of Springbok forward Ruan Venter after the influential loose forward returned to South Africa for scans on a knee injury suffered during their heavy United Rugby Championship defeat to Leinster Rugby.

Venter lasted just four minutes of the Lions' 31-7 loss at the Aviva Stadium before being carted from the field clutching his right knee in visible discomfort. Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen later confirmed the 23-year-old had flown home on Sunday night to undergo medical assessments, with fears mounting that the injury could sideline him during a crucial stage of the season.

"Unfortunately, Ruan Venter flew back last night to get scans on that knee," Van Rooyen said from Limerick.

"We hope it's not horrible news, but he is quite uncomfortable and sore. We'll wait to see what the scans show and what is needed."

The injury comes at the worst possible time for both the Lions and the Springboks. Venter has emerged as one of the Johannesburg side's standout performers this season, impressing with his physicality and versatility across blindside flank and lock. His recent form had reportedly strengthened his hopes of adding to his lone Springbok cap ahead of the international season.

Rassie Erasmus names his first Bok squad soon ahead of fixtures against the Barbarians, England, Scotland and Wales before Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series with New Zealand later this year, and Venter had appeared firmly in contention.

For now, though, the Lions' immediate concern is Saturday's decisive URC showdown against Munster Rugby at Thomond Park.

Despite sitting fifth on the standings, the Lions have not yet secured a playoff place and know they still need a result in Limerick to guarantee qualification for the quarter-finals for the first time.
