Ackermann was critical of the Bulls' second-half performance, saying, "Our lineouts, our maul defence, our attack fluency - it just wasn't where it needed to be⦠In the second half we fell apart." The coach highlighted that while his team had started brightly, early opportunities went unconverted, and the Stormers capitalized under pressure.
"It's a game of 'what ifs'," Ackermann reflected. "What if we scored Canan (Moodie's) early try or finished those maul opportunities? There were points out there for us that we just didn't take." He credited the Stormers for their tactical approach, which kept the Bulls pinned in their own half, saying, "They came with a plan to pin us and kick a lot. They won those little bits and pieces, and in the second half they were the better team."
The Bulls could be without two key backline players for their upcoming clash against fifth-placed Cardiff on Friday. Centre Harold Vorster failed his head injury assessment following the Stormers loss, while winger Sebastian de Klerk may have suffered a repeat foot injury, leaving him in a moon boot and scheduled to see a doctor on Monday.
Ackermann also noted the absence of scrumhalf Embrose Papier due to personal reasons, adding, "One will never know how many touches he would've had and the influence, but reality is we have quality nines in the squad⦠Paul (de Wet) is a good player, Zak (Burger) is a good player."
The Bulls coach expressed disappointment at the contrast between the Stormers defeat and his side's recent form, having won four consecutive matches prior. "We were caught off guard; we really felt the team had prepared well this week," he said. "It was the basic stuff that let us down. That is the big disappointment."
Ackermann emphasized accountability, both for himself and the coaching staff. "We as coaches must look at ourselves and take on the chin as a team," he said. "Form is out the door in these derbies - everyone is good, and the Stormers were more accurate than us."
With only six regular-season games remaining and the Bulls sitting eighth on the URC log, Ackermann stressed the need for a fast recovery. "This one hurts because of the way we played. But there's not a lot of time. We have a short turnaround - we play on Friday - and the best thing we can do is fix ourselves and come back with the right mindset."
