Impi Visser leads Blitzboks to back-to-back Cape Town 7's glory

Springbok Sevens captain Impi Visser says improved aerial control and protecting possession were decisive factors in their hard-fought 21–19 win over Argentina in a gripping HSBC SVNS Cape Town final.

Speaking after guiding the Blitzboks to consecutive Cape Town titles at a lively DHL Stadium, Visser said once they secured their restarts and channelled the ball effectively, the team’s fighting spirit shone through.

"Once we started to get into our phases and started to get the ball into the wide channels, the boys started to flow and credit to them for clawing their way back and showing that fighting spirit that the Blitzboks are all about."

Philip Snyman’s side also etched their name into the history books by becoming the first men’s team to defend the title in Cape Town under the revamped HSBC SVNS format.

Visser added that the group carried one key motto into the weekend, particularly into the final, and that was to “stay in the moment”.

"We told ourselves that we want to stay in the moment and win the big moments, and I think the boys definitely did that."

The third leg of the series takes place in late January in Singapore.

Reflecting on the opening two rounds, Visser said he was proud of the team’s response after a disappointing fifth-place finish in Dubai, highlighting their determination to end the year strongly.

"We are going to have a little break now over Christmas, which the boys deserve. I'm very proud of them."

South Africa, New Zealand and Fiji are locked at the top of the HSBC SVNS standings on 32 points after two tournaments, with France on 28, Australia on 26 and Argentina on 24.
