England thrash Wales to make Six Nations statement as Henry Arundell scores hat-trick

Steve Borthwick's side ran in a comprehensive bonus-point win that extended England's Test winning streak to 12 matches, while delivering a chastening afternoon for a Wales team who arrived in south-west London with expectations at an all-time low.

The margin of defeat also highlighted the scale of the rebuilding task facing Steve Tandy's squad.

England set the tone early, with Henry Arundell producing a devastating first-half hat-trick as the hosts tore through a fragile Welsh defence.

Ben Earl added another try before the interval, as Wales struggled badly and were increasingly the architects of their own downfall.

Their problems were compounded by discipline issues, with Nicky Smith and Dewi Lake both sin-binned, leaving the visitors reduced to 13 players during key periods of the contest.

The second half followed a similar pattern. England maintained relentless pressure and were rewarded with a penalty try, before Tom Roebuck and Tommy Freeman crossed to complete the scoring and put a gloss on an already dominant display.

Wales rarely threatened in response and were unable to halt the momentum once England had established control.

The result came just days after France defeated Ireland in the tournament opener on Thursday, adding extra significance to England's performance as they seek to keep pace with the champions.
