Springbok fans can rejoice as Cheslin Kolbe's ankle injury is not as serious as initially feared.

The World Cup winner was carted off the field in agony after he landed awkwardly on his ankle in the act of scoring a try for Toulon at Stade de Gerland on Saturday.

Kolbe was in tears on the back of the medical buggy, sparking fears that it could be a serious injury, leaving his participation in the upcoming Rugby World Cup in doubt.

However, in an update on the teams' injuries, Toulon revealed that the diminutive winger only has a "sprained" ankle.

"Victim of a sprained ankle, our South African wing is currently undergoing treatment," read Toulon's statement in part.

French publication L'Equipe reported that Kolbe would only be out for up to a month with the issue.

"Frustrated and disappointed, but just got to keep the faith and keep going," tweeted Kolbe on Monday.

"Still grateful for the victory and the outcome."
