Bulls crush Dragons to storm into URC play-off contention with seven-try rout

Arriving in Wales sitting eighth on the table, Johan Ackermann's side knew victory was non-negotiable. They delivered emphatically, running in seven tries to climb to fifth place and put pressure on rivals still to play over the weekend.

Despite the eventual scoreline, the opening exchanges were competitive. The visitors struck first through scrum-half Embrose Papier, who darted over from the base of a dominant scrum in the 11th minute. The Dragons responded with one of the highlights of the match, as slick handling in midfield released Fine Inisi to burst through for a well-taken try, briefly levelling matters.

The home side, buoyed by recent European success and a strong run at Rodney Parade, held their own for much of the first half. However, the Bulls edged ahead before the break when hooker Johan Grobbelaar peeled off a driving maul to score, giving the visitors a narrow 12-7 lead at half-time after Handre Pollard's earlier penalty attempt had struck the upright.

Any hopes of a second-half contest quickly faded after the restart. The Bulls' powerful pack began to assert total control, with captain Marcell Coetzee crashing over to extend the lead. A potential Dragons response was denied when Jared Rosser had a try ruled out for a knock-on in the build-up - a moment that proved pivotal.

From there, it was all one-way traffic. Replacement forward Marco van Staden made an immediate impact, scoring from a quick tap to secure the bonus point before adding a second later in the match. With the Dragons' defence tiring, the Bulls piled on further tries through Devon Williams and Sergeal Petersen to complete the rout.
