Letsile Tebogo drives marketing of the World Relay Championships in Botswana

Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo has stepped in to take charge of promoting Africa’s first-ever World Senior Relay Championships in Gaborone, Botswana taking place on 2-3 May.

The face of African athletics has openly expressed concern over the lack of visibility around the championships in his home country, saying more needs to be done to match the magnitude of the occasion.

With some of the continent’s biggest stars set to descend on Botswana, Tebogo is determined to ensure the event captures the imagination of fans and delivers a packed stadium atmosphere.

"I mean it's a 50/50 thing depending on how you interact, for me personally, that's why I've now taken the responsibility. It wasn't my responsibility to sell the whole race event to the people but now looking at what's happening, I'm not happy with the current status of how things are in Botswana,” Tebogo said.

“How we are selling our own event, the first of many. We never know when Africa is going to host this kind of race, so, now we've decided to just step in, take the responsibility and sell it in a way possible."

The 22-year-old has now called on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to play a role in amplifying the event across the region.

Tebogo believes South Africa’s powerful television and radio platforms could significantly boost awareness and drive support across borders.

"I don't know because I haven't watched TV in a long time because I have been playing games. I don't know how SABC is helping us push the World Race event but I'll really appreciate seeing other people supporting us,” he added.

“We need to see different kinds of African flags in those stands so if SABC could help us, not just SABC, any other public platform that could help us push that initiative to bring as many people as possible to that stadium."
