Kingdom Stars retains TNL Division 2 championship at home

KwaZulu-Natal Kingdom Stars coach Nompumelelo Mthembu is happy with the team’s good display to help retain the Telkom Netball League Division 2 title at the Durban ICC.

Stars convincingly defended the championship, after securing a 43-33 victory against the Western Cape Tornados on Saturday evening.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mthembu is grateful that her dream came true after taking over as head coach to lead this year's TNL campaign.

"Overwhelmed, I am so happy and I'm so happy for the team because we had one goal, to win the finals of which we were returning our title from last year. So, we had to do it for KZN, we were playing in our home ground and the crowd was helping us a lot today and we are very happy," said Mthembu.

Stars dominated the final - securing a win with a 10 goal margin and did not allow the opponents to find their form.

Mthembu says she is happy that her players remained consistent throughout the tournament.

"I knew my girls will not disappoint me or us because we work as a team and we've been singing the song of unity and consistency. So, I think in this leg, that's what we did, consistency," she added.

Mthembu adds that their motivation for the third league was their solid defense line which saw them lose only one out nine matches.

"Because we know that Baobab has Mohlori, who's the tallest of them all in this tournament but we just told ourselves that we'll just take it as it comes. Whoever we're playing with, we need to have a game plan or use our defensive side because our defense side is the strongest one in this tournament, they make the job easy for everyone else on court."
