Karla Pretorius ready to build on De Kock legacy at UFS

Spar Proteas legend Karla Pretorius is grateful that her netball journey has opened the door to a new chapter, with the former defender set to take over as the University of the Free State netball head coach in 2027.

UFS unveiled Pretorius on Wednesday, with the 36-year-old tasked with leading the five-time Varsity Netball champions to greater heights.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Pretorius says the transition from player to professional coach has been seamless, having been involved in coaching at grassroots level while still playing.

“I am grateful that netball has opened so many doors for me and has landed me a big opportunity to lead at a high level. I have always been involved in coaching alongside my playing career, especially over the last few years. I have heavily invested in coaching at school and senior level so the transition has thus been smooth,” said Pretorius.

Pretorius brings a wealth of international experience to the role, having represented South Africa at three Netball World Cups and three Commonwealth Games.

She believes her experience as both a player and coach will put her in a strong position to build a competitive programme at UFS.

“For me, understanding the game from both a player and coaching point of view will be an advantage in helping to build a solid team and programme. My involvement in different structures and leagues abroad has also given me a good understanding of what is needed in a high-performance environment,” added Pretorius.

Pretorius will succeed veteran coach Burta de Kock, who has laid a strong foundation during her tenure. The former Spar Proteas star says she is embracing the responsibility to continue de Kock’s legacy while putting her own stamp on the programme.

“It comes with great responsibility to take the Burta de Kock legacy forward, and it is a challenge I am looking forward to. I want to further build on the foundation she has laid, while strengthening the programme, improving our competitive outcomes and focusing on holistic athlete development,” she expressed.
