Journey to title defence continues for Gauteng Golden Fireballs

Gauteng Golden Fireballs coach Dr Elsje Jordaan is pleased that the team secured a place in the 2026 Telkom Netball League semifinals despite losing their final match in Power Week 2.

The defending champions suffered a 47-37 defeat to current log leaders the Free State Crinums on Saturday afternoon at the Ellis Park Arena.

During the post-match press conference, Jordaan said she wants the players to rest before beginning preparations for the final leg of the competition.

"Yes I thought it was a good game, massive improvement from our side after power week 1. We're growing and we're learning, and coming together nicely. We are very pleased with where we are on the log and now we're looking forward to the semi-finals and preparing for the Stings."

The Gauteng side has recorded seven wins from 11 fixtures to join the Crinums, the Jaguars, and the Southern Stings in the 2026 semifinals.

Jordaan says the team will return to the drawing board to correct their mistakes and prepare thoroughly for the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Crinums assistant coach Sne Mdletshe says the team’s unity has been key to their unbeaten run across the first two TNL legs.

"I think the biggest thing is working together as a unit. We worked together on the attack and in defence, and that's the one thing that is keeping us up there."
